Fiber Cement Siding Installation in Sitka, AK
Fiber cement is a dense, substantial siding made from cement, sand and cellulose fibers. It asks more of the installer than lighter materials, and Rain Drop Roofing brings 15 years of exterior experience to getting the details right.
What you are choosing
Fiber cement is sold as boards, panels and shingle-style pieces, and many products arrive primed or factory finished. Manufacturers generally describe it as resistant to rot and insects, and as a stable, non-combustible product. The exact performance depends on the brand and line, so we work from the specification of the product you select.
- Weight
- Heavier than vinyl, so installation needs more labor and careful handling.
- Appearance
- A solid, crisp look with deep shadow lines, often chosen to resemble painted wood.
- Fastening
- Fastener type, spacing and placement follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- Finish
- Primed boards need paint. Factory finished products reduce field painting but still need care at cuts and edges.
Handling and cutting
Cutting fiber cement creates fine dust, and it contains silica, so dust control matters for the crew and for your property. Professional installers use appropriate cutting methods and protective equipment, and they manage cleanup so dust does not spread around your home. Cut edges are also sealed according to the product's directions, because exposed edges can take on moisture.
Before installation
We plan the layout, confirm the wall is flat and sound, install the barrier and flashing and set the starting line so courses stay level across the house.
During installation
Boards are carried and installed with care to avoid chipping, joints are placed and flashed as the manufacturer specifies, and trim, corners and penetrations are detailed before painting.
Finish and upkeep
Painted surfaces need periodic inspection and eventual repainting, and caulk lines at trim and joints should be checked over time. We explain the maintenance expectations for your specific product so there are no surprises. Fiber cement is a larger investment than some alternatives, and our services are paid services quoted after we measure and inspect your walls.
If you are still comparing materials, our vinyl page explains the lighter option, and our replacement page covers the process of removing old siding.
Fiber cement questions
Is fiber cement harder to install than vinyl?
Yes, generally. It is heavier, requires careful cutting and needs correct fastening and edge sealing, which is why installer experience matters.
Will it need painting?
Primed products do, and finished products may need touch-up and repainting over time. We tell you what to expect for the product you choose.
